Topic: Medicine.

Theme of the lesson: Good Health is Above Wealth.

Objectives:

·         to involve pupils in the process of communication in English;

·        to motivate learners to communicate with each other discussing the topic;

·        to develop pupil’s listening skills;

·        to practise speaking in dialogues and monologues;

·        to develop pupils’ power to learn and understand the material;

·        to encourage pupils to express their own opinion;     

Outcomes:  by the end of the lesson students will be able:

to speak about health and medicine

to distinguish different illnesses

to give advice using model verb”should”

Equipment:

·        textbooks;

·        a presentation;

·        a video;

·        cards for writing.

Type of the lesson: generalization of the pupils’ knowledge

Procedure

І. The beginning of the lesson. Greeting and aim.

- Good morning, dear pupils!

- I am glad to see you!                      

- Are you ready for the lesson?                                                                                            

- How are you feeling today?

- What are we going to talk about?

Today we are going to speak about health and problems with health. Thousand years ago ancient Greeks said: “The first wealth is health. Health is the best wealth”. These words will be the motto of our lesson. 

II. Warming up

-Let’s revise the words which describe illnesses and feelings.

  • What do we usually complain about?

Presentation

Profession of a doctor is closely connected with different illnesses. There are two types of doctors: primary care physicians and specialists. I’d like you to name the profession of the doctor answering my questions.

·        What doctor prescribes spectacles? (oculist)

·        What specialist operates on different organs? ( surgeon)

·        What doctor is filling the tooth for? (dentist)

·        How is children’s doctor called? (pediatrician)

·        What specialist will help you with a broken leg? (orthopedist)

·        Whom does the patient visit if he feels sick and giddy? (therapist)

What doctor cures our ears, throat, nose? (ENTdoctor)

Presentation

  • What should the doctor do when the patient comes?

The doctor should

o   examine the body

o   examine the throat

o   take temperature

o   take the pulse

o   take the blood pressure

o   listen to lungs

o   listen to the heart

o   write out a prescription

III. Main part

Listening

1.     Pre-listening activities

  • Match the words with their definitions:

To feel hot    -     feel ill

Feverish        -     suffering from a very high temperature

To examine   -     look at one’s body to check that he/she is healthy

Sore             -          painful, because of infection

Chest           -          the front part of your body between your neck and stomach

Breath          -         the air that you send out of your lungs

To take one’s temperature     -     measure temperature of the body

Tongue          -          the soft part inside your mouth

Prescription   -    a piece of paper on which a doctor writes a medicine for a sick  person

2.     Listening “At the Physician’s” ( a video )

You’ll watch a video. Your task is to mention the patient’s symptoms and doctor’s instructions.

3.     Post-listening activity

Complete the table                                                                                                                 Patient’s symptoms: headache, sore throat, high temperature                                   Doctor’s instructions: take medicines, have a good rest, drink warm tea with lemon

I.                  Role Game

Your hometask was to prepare dialogues according to the given situations. I invite two members of your groups to present dialogues.

II.               Writing

Look at your papers. You have to complete the sentences in which some of the children have these problems. Do this task. You have three minutes.

Headache, toothache, sore throat, stomachache, pain in the knee

III.           Speaking

o   Tell when people usually do the following things:

  • go to the dentist
  • drink warm milk with honey
  • go to bed early
  • take a medicine
  • if you have infectious disease.

o   Answer the questions

    Have you ever called the doctor?

What did you complain about? 

What did the doctor do?

What were the doctor’s instructions?

Did you recover soon?                                                                                                

Are there any advantages of being ill?

Is it good or bad to be ill?

VII. Summary of the lesson

 Making a conclusion, I have to note that we touched a very necessary topic our life is closely connected with. Let’s return to the beginning of our lesson and recollect the proverb of it: “The first wealth is health. Health is the best wealth”.I think you completely agree with these words now. We have done a lot to prove it.
