Main part
1. Vocabulary
Review
- To explain the subject of our lesson first look at the photos in your books and try to describe them. What can you see? Where are the people? What are they doing?
( Exercise 1, page 90)
Example: I can
see a lot of people in the street. They are from different countries. But they
are all happy. They have got a lot of flowers in their hands. We can see the
flags of different countries there. In
Britain people of other nations and nationalities can do a lot of things they
like according to their hobbies and interests. I think all of them consider
Great Britain their home because it gives young people hope for the future.
-
I
agree with you. But from the very early period of its history Britain has
always been a mixed society. And now let’s have a short excursion in the past.
Celts, Romans, Saxons, Vikings, Normans
- They are the names of different tribes. How are they connected with Britain?
(They are settled in Britain in different periods)
Ireland
- What about Ireland? What was in the 1840s?
( There was famine in Ireland. A million people died and a million more left Ireland and never returned. Most went to the USA, but many came to Britain.)
Britain’s Former Colonies
- You know that Britain was a very powerful state. It had a lot of colonies all over the world. What did the British government do in the 1950s and 1960s?
( In the 1950s and 1960s the British government invited people from
Britain’s former colonies to live and work in Britain. The majority were from
the West Indies, Pakistan, India and Hong Kong.)
- Central and Eastern Europe
In the last few years a lot of people have
arrived from Central and Eastern Europe. Why?
( People from countries in the European Union are free
to travel, live and work in any other EU country. Recently a lot of people have
arrived from Central and Eastern Europe)
